The mindset that directs the teaching of our children in the disciplines of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, & Research:
In Deuteronomy 11:19 YHWH instructs us on how to teach our children “You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” The primary thing we are to ingrain in our children is His instructions / teachings; that is actually all He instructs us to disciple them in: His way. The teaching of every other subject finds its roots in and stems from Yah’s instructions. Therefore our primary teaching resource is the Scriptures, for reading, writing, grammar, history, geography, science and even math, it is a book with infinite depth that only grows more interesting with each completion of it.
In Proverbs 22:6 (the Hebrew says) “Habituate a child upon the mouth of his way, and when he is old he will never depart from it.”
This Kingdom Curriculum lays out the purpose or end goal in each of the disciplines: Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Research, all other subjects either are included in the above, or are unnecessary toward the goal of raising reverent offspring (Malachi 2:15). This Kingdom Curriculum will direct you in steps to take to achieve that goal of each child being proficient and an independent learner in each of those four disciplines. May YHWH direct each of you in the best ways to implement it in your home.
READING
The purpose for reading is to be able to read, understand and apply the Scriptures. You know your job is done
- When your child reads the Scripture (and any other text you give them) with the intent to learn, understand and apply the information / lesson to his / her own life.
- When he / she stops to investigate words they don’t understand
- When they pause to meditate on what is entering their minds
- When they ask questions regarding what they’ve read
- When they can critique what they have read through the lens of the Scripture
All of these they will learn from you, as they see you do it, as you make all of these actions a habit when you read; they will follow in your footsteps, so to speak. So the simplest way to teach this is just to be the example, and everything you want to see from them, do it yourself with them as you read aloud to them in the beginning, then as they read aloud to you, and finally, because it has become their habit, they will do it too on their own.
Skills to teach:
- Learning how to read:
- Teach each letter’s name and sound or sounds (capital letters and lowercase letters). Depending on your child’s ability, this may be a good time to also teach them how to write the letters.
- Begin blending the sounds together: 2-letter syllables: ba, ca, at, ot etc., then simple 3-letter words hat, run, dog, ask, etc., then 4-letters: mama, solo, mint, want, etc. At every stage emphasizing sounding out each letter.
- Teach the rules of pronunciation, long and short vowels: hat vs hate etc., diphthongs (two vowels forming one sound): eat, soul, great, etc., and blended letters: ch, sh, ph, tion, etc.
And there you go, your child can now read!
- Understanding the text: skills that enable understanding of the text
- Vocabulary – use of a dictionary, dictionary skills
- Alphabetical order
- Using the pronunciation guide
- Language of origin of a word (etymology)
- Comparison of Common usage versus Original usage
- Contextual understanding
- Reading widely: Scripture, history, biographies, and relative literary works
- Read aloud time
- Reviewing usage of words
- Punctuation – meaning of the different punctuation marks
- Critical thinking: One has to have a base from which to judge all assertions and implications
- Does it line up with the Scripture?
- Problem solving
- Application of each lesson learned
Once your child has mastered reading with these principles, you can set them free to continue learning with all the tools and directions you have equipped them with.
This opens up to them the fields of study such as History, Geography, Science; Physics, Biology, Chemistry etc.
WRITING
The Bar/Aim is to give your child the
- Ability to express their thoughts intelligibly in writing
- Ability to give a concise and thorough written report on a given topic
Skills to teach:
- Transcribing the Scripture, word for word, mark for mark, space for space
(This is the main tool to teach writing skills; it will give understanding of and ingrain proper writing techniques through repetition, and will also teach correct spelling.)
- Story writing, Essay writing, Report writing, Summary writing
- Dictation and correction, through repetition and consistency this will teach spelling and focus.
- Neatness; this is achieved when it is required, practicing the formation of letters and a requirement on the part of the teacher that they always be written a certain way is what will bear the fruit of neat handwriting. It requires discipline and repetition – on the part of the teacher. (Writing is for others to read as well as yourself so it must legible.)
- Record-keeping; as they get older they can begin to keep a record of daily activities. (This relieves the teacher from having to do it, and teaches them the discipline of keeping a record of completed tasks.)
MATH
The Bar/Aim is to enable your child to solve problems involving numbers towards being more efficient (money matters, numbering and measurements etc.)
Also to give them proficiency in the four veins of number manipulation
Skills to teach:
-Counting to 10, 100, 1000, etc.
-Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division – as a means of solving problems
–Number sense: Numbers only go from 1 to 9, 10 shows one complete unit. And then the numbers carry on, one complete unit and one (11) one complete unit and two (12) …and so on and so forth ad infinitum.
Once that concept has been grasped, understanding the manipulation of numbers has a solid foundation from which to grow.
–Place value: each number shows quantity and value: i.e, in the number 75, the 7 is not the same value as in 27. In 75 the 7 is showing seven tens (7 cycles/groups of 10), and in 27 it is showing seven units, or ones (7 singular objects). And in the same way, the 7 in 7000 is showing 7 thousands (7 cycles/groups of 1000).
The more concrete or hands-on and visual you can be with passing on math concepts the better.
-Manipulation of numbers: mastery of all levels of addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, gained through repetition.
-Using these number principles to solve problems (money matters such as shopping etc., measuring quantities and dimensions etc.)
RESEARCH
The aim is to bring your child to the point where they can research a given topic, think critically through the discovered material, share the lessons learned and apply them to his / her own life independently.
How to teach this:
Teacher-led research:
- Level 1
We read together and think through topics together; using a notebook to record what is learned immediately.
- Level 2
Teacher gives the topic and the resources, and the questions to answer to see if the topic is understood, internalized and mentally manipulatable.
- Level 3
Teacher gives the topic and resources, student writes their own report, and gives an oral summary (teaching) on the topic. He or she also reads aloud the written report.
- Level 4
Teacher gives the topic, student finds resources, and writes and reads their report before the family / homeschool group, and/or gives an oral report.
- Level 5 – Independent Scholar
Student selects the topic, researches it, and gives a report, oral and/or written, before the clan / family / homeschool group.
*A report requires:
- A Title
- A record of current understanding (before research)
- Scriptural finding (discovery) & dictionary findings
- Other findings from books, documentaries, internet
- Criticism of findings through lens of the Scripture
- Application to real-life situations and personal implications
- Record of Resources used
When our children have ingrained the habit of these disciplines – reading, writing, mathematics and research, and when they have both the desire to grow in wisdom, and the discipline to achieve it, our work is done. And this is easily achieved within the time-span from birth to 12 (puberty). After that Isaiah 54:13 says “All your children shall be taught by YHWH, and great shall be the peace (shalom) of your children.” Ours is to be the example for them, to “Habituate them in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will never depart from it” Proverbs 22:6. We are to lead them to the Father, having given them the habits that will ensure their continued walking with Him. He will do the rest. And it does not take an 8-hour school day to achieve that!
Remember, Repetition is learning, Review is wisdom. As we repeat something it forms a habit in us, and that is the way all human beings learn. The Most High made us habitual beings therefore EVERYBODY can learn, nobody fails!
Shalom.
